Progress in the Fast Lane

Environmental Controls
- Fisk and Crawford were among the first plants in the country to install controls that reduce mercury pollution by over 90%
- Air quality in Chicago has improved over the last 10 years. In fact, one form of pollution - fine particulate matter, associated with respiratory health - has been reduced by 25%. Fisk and Crawford represent less than half of 1% of those emissions in Chicago
- The stations installed controls that reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 60%; additional controls for this pollutant come on line in 2012
- Sulfur dioxide emissions have been reduced by 30%, and we're designing additional emission controls for this pollutant that are required by the Illinois and U.S. Environmental Protection Agencies
Providing Reliable Energy
- The Fisk and Crawford plants can produce enough electricity to power more than half a million homes and businesses
- Our parent company, Edison Mission Group, is the 7th largest owner of wind power in the country
- Edison Mission Group is responsible for building one of the largest wind energy farms in Illinois, one of 30 wind farms it owns and operates in 11 states. Those wind farms can generate nearly 2,000 megawatts of power at any given time, which translates into energy for more than 500,000 homes and businesses
While we progress toward newer forms of energy, we must also maintain a balance of conventional and sustainable power. Renewable power is usually not ready at a moment's notice, which is why we also must continue to rely on our conventional power that's always available. Coal still accounts for half of our nation's electricity and is essential to providing affordable and reliable energy.
